Grilled tofu can be a worthy vegan alternative to grilled meat. As you know, tofu itself tastes bland, therefore, it would be the job of the marinade to make some yummy grilled tofu. So, there it is, all we need is a great marinade and a few pointers on how long to marinate and how long to grill.

In this article, I will share two recipes for grilled tofu. One is a quick American grill recipe that uses Cajun spice mix. It gets the job done. The other one is from a Vietnamese Tofu Master, the one who owns the Hodo Soy Beanery in Oakland, California.

1. Cajun Spiced Grilled Tofu

The Marinade

  • Soy sauce: 2 tablespoons
  • Olive oil: 1 tablespoons
  • Brown sugar: 1.5 tablespoons
  • Cajun spice: 1 tablespoon
  • Salt: To taste

Take 300gm firm tofu and cut into big slices. Mix all the ingredients of the marinade. Once the marinade is ready, all you need to do is to cover the tofu slices with the marinade, put everything in a ziplock bag, and keep it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. The tofu is now ready to grill.

Grill tofu slices for 2 minutes on either side. And it is ready to eat.

Grilled Tofu Recipe From A Vietnamese Tofu Master

Minh Tsai, Tofu Master and the founder of Hodo Soy Beanery in Oakland, California USA, shares this recipe of grilled tofu. Minh Tsai recommends marinating the tofu for at least 24 hours, maximum up to 7 days.

The Marinade

  • Sea salt
  • Brown Sugar
  • White pepper
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Curry Powder

The exact measurements of the ingredients are not specified in the recipe but you will get the idea from the video. The ingredients for the marinade are blended to a purée. Then the tofu slices are covered in the purée, transferred to a ziplock bag, and kept in the refrigerator for 24 hours, or up to 7 days. After marinating, the tofu is ready to grill.

Tofu Master suggests grilling the tofu for a total of 3-4 minutes, 1 to 2 minutes on either side.

You need to use firm tofu for this, and if Hodo tofu is not available in your area, you may like to make nice and firm tofu at home. It is really easy. Enjoy your grilled tofu.
